Facebook Says Steelers are #1 in Ohio

Browns And Bengals Move Over for Steeler Fans!

Facebook has kept track of the number of “Likes” that football fans have and came upon a startling discovery…. there are more Steeler fans in Cincinnati than Bengal fans!

Here’s an article found in SB Nation …   the article is actually from the Cincinnati Bengals, not the Steelers!!

Bengals Fans: Facebook Declares Pittsburgh Steelers As Most “Liked” In Ohio

 By on Feb 1, 5:30p

Of Facebook’s 35 million account holders, one out of ten have declared their allegiance to an NFL franchise. The results may surprise you.

If you’ve ever wanted to know how the Bengals fan base looks when illustrated onto a map of the United States, Facebook has compiled some nifty illustrations based off of data they compiled by tracking “likes” of an NFL team for every Facebook user. Roughly 3.5 million Facebook users have “liked” an NFL team, and Facebook is calling their research “one of the most comprehensive samples of sports fanship ever collected.”

“While winning seems to matter, NFL teams have local followings that are probably heavily influenced by family ties and/or where a person grew up, so we were obviously curious to see where the fans for various teams live now. By considering the physical locations of NFL fans, we can construct a map of the top team for each county in the US. It tells an interesting story about the ways that football rivalries and allegiances alternately divide and unite the country, and sometimes even individual states.”

Nfl_facebook_fans_medium

Now, if you’re even partially colorblind, you may need some help with this one. 32 teams leads to three different shades of orange on this map, but I think we can all conclude which orange is Miami, Denver, and so on. What’s fairly alarming in this map is the fact that Pittsburgh fans override about half of the state of Ohio. In other words, Bengals fans and Cleveland fans collectively tie Pittsburgh fans in the Buckeye State.

Why is that?

There are a few things to consider as we look at a sea of yellow oozing all over the state of Ohio. First, it’s important to mention that Facebook’s conclusions act almost as the Electoral College. The true numbers are taken away and each county is given a sort of winner-take-all scenario. In other words, we don’t really know exactly how many Bengals fans (or Browns fans, for that matter) are “liking” their team. We only know who’s winning over a specific county and therefore getting their pigment on Facebook’s fancy map. Second, naturally geography comes into play. A large portion of western Ohio is closer to Pittsburgh – simple as that. Also, Ben Roethlisberger’s legacy is littered all over the state of Ohio. Rothlisberger was born in Findlay, OH (or Lima, OH depending on which source you believe) where he also attended high school, and he played for three years at the University of Miami in Oxford, OH. See the chunk of yellow in the Northeast? It’s likely that Big Ben’s hometown fans occupy that space.

Steelers Threaten Lawsuit Against City for Addition of Seats

Steelers Say City is NOT Living Up to Their End of Deal

The Pittsburgh Steelers want to add 10,000 seats at the sound end of Heinz Field as well as a new animated scoreboard so those people can see it.    Sounds great.

Heinz Field - Pittsburgh, PA

However, the city is having some issues coming up with the money that they apparently under contract to do.

Pittsburgh Leading League in Penalties

Steelers Have Been Popular with the Yellow Flag

Penalties are a part of football.   The Steelers, however, have been penalized more than any other team in the NFL so far this year.   So far they penalty flags have been flying with the Steelershave averaged 9.2 penalties per game and 86.5 yards per game.

The Steelers have long been known as a team full of discipline.   “In some instances we have some guys working hard and not necessarily smart,” Tomlin said. “Those things usually smooth themselves out as you push through the first quarter of the season.”

Penalties were on the increase with the replacement refs, but have come down with the regular officials – except in Pittsburgh.

The Steelers saw the yellow flag nine times for 106 yards in their win over the Eagles last Sunday.  They were very fortunate that their miscues didn’t cause yet another loss.

In one of the Eagles drives, safeties Ryan Mundy and Ryan Clark had personal fouls that gave Philly 30 yards that ended up helping the Eagles score a touchdown in the 3rd quarter that allowed them back in the game.  Willie Colon had 4 penalties on the day which kept pushing the Steelers offense the wrong direction.

“They’re just small mental errors,” center Maurkice Pouncey said.

While Pittsburgh has been one of the most penalized teams under coach Tomlin, the Steelers were known as one of the teams with the fewest penalities under Coach Bill Cowher.   Unless the trend turns around, Tomlin’s Steelers will once again be one of the top ten most penalized teams in the NFL.

The Steelers are not trying to be known as a penalized team, but Harrison and Clark already have reputations for fines for numerous helmet to helmet hits.   One thing for certain….  the penalities are making it more difficult for the Steelers to continue their winning ways.

Here’s to a game without penalties!

Colts Coach Diagnosed with Leukemia – Arians To Take Over

Chuck Pagano in “Air Filtered” Protected Environment

Bad news for the Indianapolis Colts.   Head Coach Chuck Pagano was diagnosed with acute promyelocytic leukemia and is now hospitalized.   According to Colts owner, Jim Irsay, Pagano will not be able to coach the remainder of this season.   Former Steeler offensive Chuck Pagano diagnosed with Leukemiacoordinator will take over as the interim Colts coach.

Here is an article from the Indianapolis Star that explains the situation..

Colts coach Chuck Pagano has leukemia, will likely miss several games

Colts owner Jim Irsay said at a news conference this morning that he’s optimistic about coach Chuck Pagano recovering from leukemia.

“It’s been a very difficult week,” Irsay said. “…I am optimistic. I feel with every fiber of my body — and I know Chuck feels the same way — that he can beat this thing.”

Irsay said it’s unlikely Pagano will be able to resume his job fully this season.

Larry Cripe, Pagano’s doctor, said the goal of the treatment is to cure the disease and have Pagano return to coaching. But, Cripe added, “The process is long and complicated.” Treatment can extend up to two years.

The Star first reported the illness and that Pagano would likely miss several games while being treated for acute promyelocytic leukemia. According to the American Cancer Society website, “early diagnosis and treatment of acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL) … is important because patients with APL may develop serious blood-clotting or bleeding problems. … Treatment induces remission in 80 to 90 percent of patients.”

“The course we’re seeing is a typical course for someone with this disease,” Cripe said. “…There’s no doubt that for the next several weeks, day to day, he’s at risk of complications.”

Cripe said Pagano is “in a protected environment” at the hospital where the air is filtered.

Pagano had been feeling unusual fatigue in recent weeks and got blood tests during the bye week.

During Pagano’s absence, offensive coordinator Bruce Arians will take over as the team’s head coach.

Pagano, who will turn 52 on Tuesday, has been an assistant coach for several college and NFL teams, and most recently was the defensive coordinator for the Baltimore Ravens. He is 1-2 as the Colts first-year head coach.

Colts general manager Ryan Grigson said, “The same fighting spirit Chuck has, and has instilled in this team, is the same spirit that’s going to carry him through this fight.”

Coach Pagano seemed to be heading the Colts in the right direction and we at the Pittsburgh Steeler Fans wish him the best – our prayers are with coach Pagano for a complete recovery.

Roger Goodell Letter About Officiating Contract

It’s Official – We Have Our NFL Refs Back!

Here’s the letter that Roger Goodell sent out to fans concerning the contract situation with the officiating crews for the NFL.Roger Goodell Announces New Contract with Referees

Make sure to add your comments below!

To NFL Fans:

The National Football League is at its best when the focus is on the players and the action on the field, not on labor negotiations.
All of us who love the sport appreciate the skills and dedication of the players and coaches. That is why we are focused not just on what happens on the field but what our game will be like in another decade or two. The NFL has always tried to look ahead, to innovate, and to constantly improve in all we do.
We recognize that some decisions may be difficult to accept in the passion of the moment, but my most important responsibility is to improve the game for this generation and the next.
I believe in accountability, not excuses. And I regret we were not able to secure an agreement sooner in the process and avoid the unfortunate distractions to the game. You deserve better.
As a lifelong fan, this wasn’t an easy process for anyone involved. I particularly want to commend the replacement officials for taking on an unenviable task and doing it with focus and dedication in the most adverse of circumstances.
Our new agreement gives long-term stability to an important aspect of our game, officiating. More important, with this agreement, officiating will be better in the long run. While the financial issues received the most attention, these negotiations were much more about long-term reforms. For example, beginning with the 2013 season, the NFL will have the option of hiring a number of officials on a full-time basis to work year-round, including on the field. In addition, the NFL will have the option to retain additional officials for training and development purposes, and may assign those additional officials to work NFL games.
We are moving forward with the finest officials in sports back on the field. It’s time to put the focus where it belongs – on the clubs and players and our magnificent game, with a special thanks to our fans for their passion.

Roger Goodell
