Facebook Says Steelers are #1 in Ohio

Browns And Bengals Move Over for Steeler Fans!

Facebook has kept track of the number of “Likes” that football fans have and came upon a startling discovery…. there are more Steeler fans in Cincinnati than Bengal fans!

Here’s an article found in SB Nation …   the article is actually from the Cincinnati Bengals, not the Steelers!!

Steelers Have Most Fans in Ohio

Bengals Fans: Facebook Declares Pittsburgh Steelers As Most “Liked” In Ohio

 By on Feb 1, 5:30p

Of Facebook’s 35 million account holders, one out of ten have declared their allegiance to an NFL franchise. The results may surprise you.

If you’ve ever wanted to know how the Bengals fan base looks when illustrated onto a map of the United States, Facebook has compiled some nifty illustrations based off of data they compiled by tracking “likes” of an NFL team for every Facebook user. Roughly 3.5 million Facebook users have “liked” an NFL team, and Facebook is calling their research “one of the most comprehensive samples of sports fanship ever collected.”

“While winning seems to matter, NFL teams have local followings that are probably heavily influenced by family ties and/or where a person grew up, so we were obviously curious to see where the fans for various teams live now. By considering the physical locations of NFL fans, we can construct a map of the top team for each county in the US. It tells an interesting story about the ways that football rivalries and allegiances alternately divide and unite the country, and sometimes even individual states.”

Nfl_facebook_fans_medium

Now, if you’re even partially colorblind, you may need some help with this one. 32 teams leads to three different shades of orange on this map, but I think we can all conclude which orange is Miami, Denver, and so on. What’s fairly alarming in this map is the fact that Pittsburgh fans override about half of the state of Ohio. In other words, Bengals fans and Cleveland fans collectively tie Pittsburgh fans in the Buckeye State.

Why is that?

There are a few things to consider as we look at a sea of yellow oozing all over the state of Ohio. First, it’s important to mention that Facebook’s conclusions act almost as the Electoral College. The true numbers are taken away and each county is given a sort of winner-take-all scenario. In other words, we don’t really know exactly how many Bengals fans (or Browns fans, for that matter) are “liking” their team. We only know who’s winning over a specific county and therefore getting their pigment on Facebook’s fancy map. Second, naturally geography comes into play. A large portion of western Ohio is closer to Pittsburgh – simple as that. Also, Ben Roethlisberger’s legacy is littered all over the state of Ohio. Rothlisberger was born in Findlay, OH (or Lima, OH depending on which source you believe) where he also attended high school, and he played for three years at the University of Miami in Oxford, OH. See the chunk of yellow in the Northeast? It’s likely that Big Ben’s hometown fans occupy that space.

Pittsburgh Leading League in Penalties

Steelers Have Been Popular with the Yellow Flag

Penalties are a part of football.   The Steelers, however, have been penalized more than any other team in the NFL so far this year.   So far they penalty flags have been flying with the Steelershave averaged 9.2 penalties per game and 86.5 yards per game.

The Steelers have long been known as a team full of discipline.   “In some instances we have some guys working hard and not necessarily smart,” Tomlin said. “Those things usually smooth themselves out as you push through the first quarter of the season.”

Penalties were on the increase with the replacement refs, but have come down with the regular officials – except in Pittsburgh.

The Steelers saw the yellow flag nine times for 106 yards in their win over the Eagles last Sunday.  They were very fortunate that their miscues didn’t cause yet another loss.

In one of the Eagles drives, safeties Ryan Mundy and Ryan Clark had personal fouls that gave Philly 30 yards that ended up helping the Eagles score a touchdown in the 3rd quarter that allowed them back in the game.  Willie Colon had 4 penalties on the day which kept pushing the Steelers offense the wrong direction.

“They’re just small mental errors,” center Maurkice Pouncey said.

While Pittsburgh has been one of the most penalized teams under coach Tomlin, the Steelers were known as one of the teams with the fewest penalities under Coach Bill Cowher.   Unless the trend turns around, Tomlin’s Steelers will once again be one of the top ten most penalized teams in the NFL.

The Steelers are not trying to be known as a penalized team, but Harrison and Clark already have reputations for fines for numerous helmet to helmet hits.   One thing for certain….  the penalities are making it more difficult for the Steelers to continue their winning ways.

Here’s to a game without penalties!

Steelers Cut to 53 Players

Steelers Had Some Tough Decisions to Make

The Steelers placed 3rd round draft pick Sean Spence on IR today, then released 20 other players.   The cuts were necessary to get the squad to the league mandated 53 players.

Two veterans that have spent time with the Steelers who were released today are offensive lineman Trai Essex and punter Jeremy Kapinos (Waived/Injured List). Essex has played in 76 career games for Pittsburgh (28 starts) while Kapinos has been the team’s punter for most of the past two seasons.

Other players released were defensive backs Damon Cromartie-Smith, Terrence Frederick and Josh Victorian, linebackers Brandon Hicks and Marshall McFadden, defensive linemen Corbin Bryant, Igbinosun Ikponmwosa and Jake Stoller, quarterback Jerrod Johnson, running back DuJuan Harris, wide receivers Tyler Beiler, Toney Clemons, David Gilreath, Marquis Maze and Derrick Williams, and offensive linemen Ryan Lee, John Malecki and Chris Scott.

Some of the more interesting moves included the decision to go with undrafted rooked Drew Butler as the punter.  Injuries to Jeremy Kapinos led to the opportunity for Butler.   During the pre-season, Butler averaged 45.9 yards and placed 6 of his 28 punts inside the 20 yard line.

Another key move was to keep Charlie Batch after Byron Leftwich won the backup position.   The Steelers decided to keep only 4 receivers, which left David Gilreath for the practice squad.  Gilreath is a talented receiver who caught 4 passes for 78 yards in the second pre-season game .

Mike Wallace Reports to Steelers

Wallace Expected to Make Big Impact

Mike Wallace reported to the Steelers camp today after holding out for a long term contract.Mike Wallace returns to Steelers

Here is a blog post from ESPN for the story:

Wide receiver Mike Wallace reported to the Pittsburgh Steelers on Tuesday after missing all of the offseason workouts and training camp practices. But Wallace should be on the field in the season opener at Denver because he can make an impact in the game.
I’m not suggesting you should draft Wallace in the second round of your Fantasy draft. I’m not even predicting he’ll get over 50 yards receiving in Week 1.
What I do know about is Wallace’s speed. He won’t be as comfortable in Todd Haley’s playbook as Antonio Brown because he walked into the Steelers facility 12 days before the regular season kicks off for Pittsburgh. Still, Wallace knows how to run one route, the one where he goes straight down the field and flies past defenders. As coach Mike Tomlin has put it, Wallace is “a threat to take the top off a defense at any time.”
Others don’t see Wallace making much of a difference early in the season. ESPN’s Jerry Rice said on SportsCenter that there’s “no way” Wallace will be ready to make an impact in the season opener after missing all that time. Rice even suggested it could take Wallace four to five games to do so.
Even Wallace would have to acknowledge that he would’ve improved his chances of making an impact if he showed up last week and got a few snaps in a preseason game with the starting offense. But he didn’t want to play in a preseason game. He sees his big paychecks when the regular season begins. It’s selfish, but it’s within his rights as an unhappy restricted free agent.

David DeCastro Potentially Out for Season

Steelers 1st Round Draft Pick Potentially Gone for Season

Mike Tomlin during his post game conference, announced that David DeCastro has a right knee injury that is “potentially severe”.   The Steeler’sDavid DeCastro first round draft pick will have an MRI when they get back to Pittsburgh and assess after the results are back.

Tomlin also mentioned that Defensive End, Brett Keisel, also suffered a mild high ankle sprain.   It appears that Brett will be back in time for the season opener vs. the Broncos.
